Hiking Phoenix: Shadow Mountain

Most visitors head to the big dog hiking mountains, Camelback and Piestewa Peak, but they can be crowded and parking can be difficult! You can still get fantastic views on some of the smaller mountains nearby. Shadow Mountain is a great option in North Phoenix.

Shadow Mountain is a hiking destination that flies under the radar, so you won't run into a ton of other people there. The circumference trail around the mountain is approximately 3 miles long and is considered a moderate level hike with an elevation gain of around 420 feet.

The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it a great option for hikers of all skill levels. Along the way, hikers will enjoy stunning views of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Piestewa Peak, and the surrounding desert mountains.

It is important to note that hiking in the desert can be challenging, particularly during the hotter months. GO EARLY! Be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Additionally, it is important to stay on the designated trail and follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural environment.

Overall, Shadow Mountain is a great option for hikers looking for an easier hike with beautiful views of the desert landscape. See more details below:
