Most visitors head to the big dog hiking mountains, Camelback and Piestewa Peak, but they can be crowded and parking can be difficult! You can still get fantastic views on some of the smaller mountains nearby. Shadow Mountain is a great option in North Phoenix.

Shadow Mountain is a hiking destination that flies under the radar, so you won't run into a ton of other people there. The circumference trail around the mountain is approximately 3 miles long and is considered a moderate level hike with an elevation gain of around 420 feet.

SHADOW MOUNTAIN HIKING DETAILS

  • Views: 360 Views of the Valley, Piestewa Peak, Four Peaks on a good day.

  • Distance: Circumference Trail is 2.7-3 miles long depending on the route you take.

  • Difficulty: Because it doesn’t climb very high in altitude compared to other mountains in the valley, this one is a little easier. However, there are loose rocks, so be careful and sure footed.

  • Getting Lost: Don’t worry, even if you feel lost, there are many trails down to the street that can help you get back to “civilization” pretty quickly.

  • Crowds: You won’t find them here.

  • Parking: limited street parking at 2601 E. Acoma Dr., You can also enter the trail behind Dream City Church. Park at your own risk.
